Psychology

VIMHANS is fortunate to have a team of highly skilled, experienced, and academically oriented professionals in Clinical Psychology. A broad range of psychosocial interventions have been used and evaluated as the cornerstone in treatment strategies for mental illnesses. Vimhans places considerable emphasis on the psychological component of the Bio-psycho –social model in its clinical services.

An Individual Psychotherapy/ Counselling Session aims at:

  • To correct misconceptions regarding illness
  • To impart the coping skills for tackling provocative situations or triggers
  • Instill optimism in the individual and provide realistic feedback on mental health issues.

It simultaneously emphasizes the potential reversibility of the conditions and highlights the need for change in approach and attitude.

  • Introduce and engage a client in treatment to enhance motivation
  • To help individual improve interpersonal functioning and enhancing social support

Psychological interventions may initially be an unstructured, supportive approach. However they progress to more structured eclectic therapies such as - Cognitive Behaviour Therapy (CBT), Contingency Management (CM), MET (Motivational Enhancement), as well as Mind-body + creative approaches where appropriate.

Arts Based Therapy serves as self expression - a catalyst in the process of holistic treatments. It caters to all Psychological, Emotional and Social aspects of an individual and for stimulation of the brain. We employ this medium at VIMHANS in various forms - art, movement, music, craft, and clay.

Psychology services for Children and Adolescents also include specific services such as:

  • Psychological Evaluation and Assessment
  • Techniques like Play Therapy, DBT
  • Addressing common parental concerns via intervention for Conduct and Behaviour Issues
  • Mood disorders often emanating from, Bullying, Low Self Esteem, Body Image issues, and Academic Underachievement
  • Addiction Management especially with reference to: (i) Technology (ii) Substances (iii) Food faddism and a variety of dietary concerns.
